String Pins vs. Free-Fall Pins

Does Cal Bowl use string pins?

No. Absolutely no string pins at Cal Bowl. Every lane runs free-fall pinsetters, so the pins hang on nothing and fall the way ten-pin bowling was meant to be played. No strings attached. Literally.

What's the difference between string pins and free-fall pins?

String pinsetters tie a cord to the top of every pin. The strings hold pins back, change how they fall and carry, and change how the game scores. Free-fall pins are loose, so they scatter, spin and take out their neighbors. That's the real ten-pin game.

Do string pins really make a difference?

You'll see it on the first ball. String pins can get tangled and need resetting, and they don't fly into each other the same way. With free-fall pins there's nothing to tangle: every strike crashes, and every spare is earned.
